Pencils are tools we use both in our school years and in the workplace. But how exactly are the pencils we use every day made?
Step 1: Use a cutting tool to make two thin wooden slats, and carve a shallow groove along one side of each slat. The slats do not need to be extremely thin, as they will be sanded down in later steps.
Step 2: Apply strong adhesive to the grooved side of one slat, place the graphite lead into the groove, and press the two slats together. Leave the assembly for one hour to allow the glue to dry completely.
Step 3: Cut the bonded slat to a narrower width, then shape and sand it into a hexagonal pencil blank.
Step 4: Coat the sanded blank with clear varnish to seal the wood and add shine, then apply white paint to one end for decoration.
Finally, sharpen the other end with a pencil sharpener, and a wooden pencil is complete. While this process may differ slightly from industrial manufacturing, the basic method remains the same.
